Latex Allergies

Pure natural latex is derived from the Hevea Brasiliensis, also known as the rubber tree. Pure Natural Latex dynamically conforms to provide optimal support in any sleeping position, is inherently anti-microbial, and mildew and dust mite resistant.

The natural latex is inherently hypoallergenic for sufferers of mold, mildew or bacterial allergies. In addition, our mattress and pillows are resistant to dust mites and are naturally resistant to mold and mildew which are contributors to asthma and pulmonary function allergies.

All of our latex mattresses and latex pillows are made out of 100% pure natural latex unless otherwise stated.

Latex allergies became a topic of concern in the media during the late 1990's. Proteins are the source of allergic reactions. These natural proteins occur in many common everyday items, including milk weeds, tomatoes, and bananas. It was found that a very small portion of the public had severe allergic reactions of natural rubber latex. Most of these cases, involved workers in the health care industry that came into frequent contact with latex made by the dipped vulcanization process. The dipped vulcanization process is a closed cell process does not allow for the proteins to be washed out. This is very different from the way latex foam that is used in mattresses and pillows are made.

The latex foam used in our products is made with an open celled foam rubber. Medical products are made with a closed cell  which makes it difficult to wash off the suspected proteins that can cause allergies. The latex used in our mattresses and pillows are washed at least 5 times. This process ensures that most of the protein is removed from the latex. The openness of the cells allow this thorough washing, whereas the closed sealed surface of a medical product, such as a latex glove, is difficult to wash. In addition, all of our latex products are covered with organic cotton fabric. There is no skin contact with the latex.

Complaints for allergic reactions to natural rubber latex are monitored by the FDA. The largest latex manufacture in the United States has reported that in their 28 years in the business of selling millions of pillows, mattresses, and cosmetic sponges, there has never been a single complaint stemming from the natural rubber found in our mattresses and pillows.

However, if you have a latex allergies, we do recommend that you choose a product that is made out of something other than latex. We offer several other natural alternatives.

To be on the safe side, we do recommend that if you have allergies, are chemically sensitive, or are highly sensitive to smells, that you have the materials tested before purchasing our products. If you would like to test yourself with the materials used in our mattresses, please order a Mattress Materials Samples Kit: $5.00. Take the samples to your physician or allergy specialist to have the materials tested for you.

Allergy testing

Testing for a latex allergy:

One type uses a skin test in which a diluted solution of a testing material that contains some of the latex components is introduced into the skin. Telltale signs of a latex allergy include subsequent swelling at the skin test site.
Another type of latex allergy test is a blood test in which a blood sample is checked for certain types of allergy-producing antibodies. After careful study of your medical history and allergy testing for latex, it's usually easy to determine whether you're allergic to latex.

The blood test for latex allergy is widely available through most commercial labs. Skin testing is usually only available at larger health care facilities. If you have some latex allergy signs and symptoms, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, shortness of breath and wheezing, which occur upon exposure to latex, it's a good idea to be tested.

If you know that you have a latex allergy, we recommend that you choose an alternative non-latex product. We do not warranty for allergies.
