Down Versus Pure Grow Wool
Down can absorb moisture but it does not dry quickly which can make it wet to the touch and very uncomfortable to be in contact with it. The moisture, results in an increase in body temperature which can make it uncomfortable to sleep. Wool helps regulate body temperature to a comfortable level since is can not only absorb moisture quickly, it can also dry quickly. See the qualities of wool for more details. Goose and duck down, which is usually a mix of the soft underbelly plumes and feathers, provides more support than smooth synthetic fibers, but still tends to bottom out under body weight. Therefore, it does not support or distribute the body weight away from the pressure points of the body. We are also concerned about the cruelty and treatment of the animals when they are raising them and plucking the feathers off them. There is no such thing as cruelty free down. There is not a certified program to make sure that the animals used for down are treated humanely. Feathers obtained for the purpose of comforters and duvet covers are usually plucked off of live birds that have been disoriented because they are hung from their feet throughout the process. Once the feathers have grown back, the process is repeated a couple more times. In the meantime, many of these birds are force fed so that they are more plump for fois gras dishes. Many die from the stomachs exploding when their stomachs burst from overfeeding. For more information on the treatment of the ducks and geese, please see the following web pages: We only used Pure Grow Wool in our mattresses and bedding products. |
